8.0“Another great example of Japanese hospitality.”
+The staff were helpful and pleasant. Mr Tanaka came personally to pick us up at Kurobe Station and as we arrived early and the day was rainy Mr Tanaka brought us to a nearby roadside station where locals do their shopping and have family outings. We had had an enjoyable two hours before he came to pick us up to go to the hotel for check in. The hotel compound has a scenic Japanese garden.
−The bath is rather old and the common bath was small and some taps are not working well.

9.0“Superb”
+In this ever changing, chaotic and even crazy world, I admire a well-run family business (small or large) which passes on from generation to generation, like the Tanakaya (since 1911). My wife and I have one of the five larger rooms with superb views of the Japanese garden with architectural and water features (charming with the new snow cover). The included Kaiseki dinner (delicious, sumptuous, but not too elaborate or overly filling) and breakfast are served not in our room but in a separate and private dinner room, which we like. The clear-water onsen is not huge and indoor only, but has full glass panels facing a small bamboo grove in the garden. Old-fashioned warm and attentive service attitudes prevailed. A mature lady of the 4th generation greeted us when we arrived, another of the 5th generation briefed us, and a third lady was assigned to take us to our room, serve us dinner and breakfast and prepare our beddings. All three of them waited for us when we checked out, and followed our small shuttle bus as it drove out to the parking lot and onto the road to wave us goodbye despite the snow and cold weather. We saw members of the 6th generation chatting and playing in the lou

+The staff Yulley is so sweet and friendly. She served us all the time. Dinner and breakfast both are perfect. Classical Japanese style.
−The facilities are old. And we can't showr in our room. But it's the traditional Japanese style with a big bath top only

10.0“A paradise of food and relaxation.”
+Gorgeous. A trip back in time. The onsen was delightfully hot (even by the standards of onsen). The garden was peaceful and relaxing. The room itself was clean and spacious, especially for a single traveler. I imagine it would be a bit more crowded with the maximum of four, but still well worth the price. The food was magnificent. My first dinner was 13 courses! Truly some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. The staff were kind, courteous, and friendly. They picked me up at the station, saw to my every need, and made me feel like an honored guest. Truly, words are not enough to convey my stay.
−Leaving.
