“Could have been lovely but room 27 was awful”
+The property was an Agriturismo farm/hotel over 300 years old beautifully maintained and restored. My room (27) was overlooking the back where the fields and dining tables were located. The view was gorgeous. The property location near many vineyards in Montalcino and Montepulciano was exceptional. It was end of farming season so the gardens were worn down and past prime, but must have been lovely earlier. The wild grapes and pomegranates were wonderful. Breakfast was good but not exceptional.
−It's a long list. They could have done a LOT better to be kind to this guest and I presume others before and since. My room (27) was overlooking the back of the property. They have three puppies roaming free during the day described to me as "pets" not working dogs (I asked). At night one dog was left loose and barked persistently under my window and the fields beyond. Over 8 hours and each of three nights it was relentless. I didn't sleep and told the staff the next morning and asked could the dog be brought inside. The response? "Madam, we are a working farm and he stays outside". Wow. And I thought it was a hotel facility! And that they cared about their guests! Silly American. Could they change my room? Nope. Even with the windows closed on a rainy night, that dog barked. Other reviews commented on staff attitude. I should have listened. Next: my room 27 had a stench of mold, coming from the 4 bathroom drains. The very old stone sink had black mold staining. To say it was bad is an understatement. Management was notified, they commited to clean it. Again, no possibility to change rooms. They tried cleaning it with bleach but to no avail. “The best part of the experience was leaving”

−Where to start? Apart from the location, our stay at Podere Spedalone was a complete disappointment. No air-conditioning, no staff available when we needed assistance, and flies eating the majority of the food at breakfast. The furniture in the room was terrible, the curtains did not cover the window, the bathroom was awful, and the bedding was equally poor. Even the most basic comforts were missing. For what we paid, the lack of care and attention to the guest experience was unacceptable. Beyond the location, I struggle to find a single redeeming feature. Exceptionally poor value for money, and somewhere I would never stay again. The best part of the experience was leaving.

“Following the Change in Ownership, Podere Spedalone is Going Downhill Fast”
+The best thing about this property is its location. The views are simply stunning. Also, the dirt road to get there is really not a problem (note it was dry during our stay; wet and rutted could be a different story). Breakfast was excellent.
−When researching this property, I also went to the Podere Spedalone website. The website designer is a marketing genius; the place sounds other wordly. The problem is that reality is a far cry from the marketing materials. Based on reviews before I booked, there had been a downward trend. The change in management had apparently negatively impacted the property. I hedged our bet for Val d'Orcia and split it three nights at PS and three elsewhere. I am so glad I did that and did not stay the full six nights at PS. In fact, Podere Spedalone was probably the biggest disappointment during our month all over Italy. It is apparent that this property has absentee ownership. There is no head of house, everyone feels like an employee, the service is minimal and there is no focus on hospitality. It literally feels like no one is in charge. The worst thing by far was the dinner service. While the community dining concept is a good one, no employee sets the tone or helps break the ice with other guests. The food was a huge disappointment. During our three dinners, only one or two items were very good. Most other items were tiny in size and often bland, overcooked or just not good. With access t

“Disappointing and overpriced.”
+Proximity to Pienza and the surrounding area. The dinner was wonderful due to the other guests in attendance.
−The road in was terrible. There was no welcome from the staff. We felt like an inconvenience. The room was in a state of disrepair. The property was beyond rustic.

“Un superbe séjour en famille dans un cadre idyllique.”
+Nous avons 3 superbes jours dans cet agriturismo, dans un cadre enchanteur. La présence des nombreux animaux a ravi nos 2 filles. Le petit déjeuner était complet et délicieux, avec beaucoup de produits faits maison, sucrés comme salés. Ce fut un vrai plaisir de séjourner chez vous !

+Absolut traumhaft! Das gemeinsame Essen mit den anderen Gästen hat soo Spaß gemacht 😊 Ein absolutes Glück das wir dort gelandet sind. Auch wenn es vielleicht am A... der Welt ist, es ist sowas von Wert dorthin zu kommen. Wir kommen definitiv wieder 😀

“Podere Spedalone c’est la Toscane comme on la rêve”
+il est difficile de faire mieux en ce qui concerne l’emplacement de ce podere. La vue est époustouflante et les bâtiments ont beaucoup de caractère. Notre chambre et notre salle de bain étaient parfaites.
−le seul petit hic c’est les dîners collectifs nous aurions aimé que l’on nous propose une table pour deux du coup nous n’avons pas dîné sur place

“Gezellige en authentieke sfeer en leuke interactie met andere gasten.”
+De sfeer en de gezelligheid met de andere gasten en het personeel. We hebben een hele leuke kookcursus gedaan.
−Douches klein, niet heel schoon, kapotte en disfunctionele douchekoppen. Heel erg zuinig met handdoeken (bijv voor het zwembad). Geen verduistering voor de ramen. Bij aankomst moet je een 'waiver-overeenkomst' van 2 pagina's tekenen, waarin aansprakelijkheid voor elk denkbaar risico wordt uitgesloten. Dat is echt bespottelijk, on-europees en ook onacceptabel. De gezamenlijke maaltijden waren lekker maar niet heel bijzonder.
