9.0“Wonderful!”
+Great location, close to national park and Shin Hotaka ropeway. Rooms very spacious and comfortable. Meals were a highlight, great food in private and quiet eating areas.

7.0“Nice onsen near the ropeway”
+Good location if you want to be close to the ropeway and trailheads nearby. Private onsen was lovely!! Traditional meals were good.
−The stink bugs are a bummer and the host kinda rushed through checking and the dinner description

6.0“Lot of Unrealized Potential”
+I am a little conflicted about reviewing Kazeya. On the positive side (the negatives come later), the staff was friendly and quite helpful, especially in checking in and describing our dinner/breakfast options. The private onsens (there are two of them) are great and quite readily available. For our two night stay, we were easily able to access the private hot tubs quite often - in fact, we did not even visit the shared onsens. We drove here and in fact, I would highly recommend driving here just because of the longer distances between things you can do and the need to juggle public transportation schedules. The ryokan is well-situated to access most places within a short drive. If you are trying to access Kamikochi, you can go up the ropeway and then hike down(might require very fit people or for you to split the trip by staying at a mountain cabin) or drive to the parking area near Hirayu Onsen and take a shuttle. The shuttle stop to go to Nakasendo is a half hour away.
−While the staff was great, I think Kazeya suffers from a poor management/owner. From the moment we entered, you could feel the cost-cutting measures that made our stay less than optimal, given the price point ($250+/night). For one, the carpets were worn out and suffered from quite a large stain and looked like it had not been replaced for a while. Secondly, the hotel did warn us about bugs being present, which is to be expected in a place that is in the middle of the forest. But it really isn't bug we need to be worried about. There is only one insect that the place is infested with, and those are stinkbugs. This is where the cost-cutting measures adopted by management really shows. The stinkbugs, if they are coming from outside, can easily be controlled by the use of proper outer shutters on the windows. But most of the shutters were ill-fitting and never really closed properly. There is something quite wrong with the infestation of stinkbugs (see pic below). What I see is an infestation, not a minor problem. We did not open our windows, by the way. Thirdly, having stayed at a variety of ryokans in Japan over the past few years, most of the dishes are made tamer to cater to large

7.0+The food is great. It is located in a peaceful outpost. The rooms are big. The staff is friendly.
−The property is a little rundown, and the quality of the pijamas or towels is low. It is connected by bus to the main hub Hyraru Onsen but the bus runs once per hour.
