“Great location but past its prime”
+The hotel is in a great location, overlooking the lake and next to the pier for the pirate ship. For $400 a night, the value for money is poor.
−Having said that, there is not much in the vicinity and the next small town is a few kilometers away. The hotel is a grande old dame, a stunning building but in need of some refurbishment. The room and the hotel smelled a little funky. Drinks and meals are way overpriced. Breakfast is OK, nothing special, and the dining room is depressing. Staff are not too helpful, depending on you are dealing with. I also notice that they do not reply to any review, as a hotel manager myself, this is a red flag; showing a little too much pride.

“Came for the view and that's what we got from our room!”
+The location with the Lakeview from most rooms was superb! Unfortunately ours only got a side view of the lake and it was raining on both days we were there.
−We arrived in early October 2026. We were not aware that it was a very quiet season for Hakone. It is not the high season for summer of course, but we did not expect it to be so quiet that all but one of the restaurants were opened for business at night. We have no choice but to dine at the hotel. Although there were several restaurants at the hotel on offer, most seemed not quite open for business. We dined at the cafe where most guests ended up in but we found the menu limited in choice.

+Comfortable rooms, great food (we are at the French restaurant for dinner and the breakfast buffet was also great with many American, European, and Japanese options), and we enjoyed the onsen as well. Very close to the pier if you want to take the ferry or the pirate ship, and there's also a bus stop right out front.
