10.0“Exceptional stay”
+Simply exceptional from beginning to end. Staff were extremely helpful and welcoming at every step. Room, which was essentially its own villa, was bright, spacious, and perfect. Family onsen was incredibly easy to book and was great for my family. But what really set Beppu Showaen apart was its food. Traditional Japanese Kaiseki dinners and breakfasts were light yet layered with depth of flavors that were masterful. My son said this was his favorite hotel during our 8-day trip and I couldn't agree more. We were sad we only booked for 2 nights and would absolutely book this hotel again next time we are in Beppu.
−Definitely need a rental car or use the hotel shuttle, but otherwise everything was immaculate.

10.0“It was peaceful and relaxing!”
+It was a beautiful and traditional Japanese style stay. The private and public onsens were a great amenity. The staff was also incredibly kind and generous - the owner of the hotel even gave us a ride to the station after we checked out. I highly recommend this place if you want a peaceful place to relax!

2.0+Spacious room
−They didn't clean our rooms on the second day and they said it is because we didnt ask it. Basically they didnt care at all other than renting out the rooms - and that is not what you expect when you pay a high cost for ryokan. I never seen an accommodation that said they didnt clean the room because we didnt ask (at least at this lrice level) they didnt tell this policy when we checked in, and I think they made this excuse. I think they just dont care because there are many stupid tourists like us who will visit them anyhow. It was a gift for my mother's birthday and it was her first experience with ryokan and even she said it was very disappointing to see no hospitaity at all...I think this ryokan needs to be a shame of Japanese ryokan industry. No caring, no service and no hospitality. Compared to other ryokans we tried so far, this was a total disappointment and we paid a lot of money for this disappointment. We paid a kaiseki dinner ($500) and the quality was very disappointing tool, overall nothing was good.

7.0“Almost a great experience”
+The terrain, the house we rented and especially the hot springs were beautiful. It is a nice place to relax. The initial reception was certainly pleasant. We could sleep well in the beds.
−As others have mentioned, the staff's ability to speak English, or at least our ability to comprehend it, is limited. Ultimately this did not cause any major problems, but occasionally left us confused. And, well, we found a cockroach in our house (nr 29) at around 22:00 on the second day. This, despite keeping the house closed off to the extent of our knowledge, except for entering and exiting the front door. I am not sure how common this is around these parts, but it was a first for me. We called the staff repeatedly, but it seems they were already gone. So we had to catch the thing ourselves and release it outside. This event replaced my state or coziness with mild paranoia from that point onward. Fortunately it was the only one we found. I also hit my head a couple of times, because I kept forgetting I'm slightly taller than the front door entrance. Maybe this is not the best place for Dutch city boys.
