Is hotel breakfast included actually good value?
Breakfast can save time, but the right choice depends on the price, your schedule and what you would otherwise buy.

Start with the price difference
Do not ask whether breakfast is good in general. Ask what it costs on this booking. Compare the total for the room-only rate with the breakfast-included rate, then divide the difference by the number of people and mornings.
That is the number to compare with a café, bakery or grocery breakfast nearby. If the hotel price is close and you value convenience, it may be worth it. If it is much higher, room only may be the better deal.
Compare totals rather than nightly prices, so taxes and fees are counted the same way on both rates. Our guide to comparing taxes and fees shows how.
Check whether you will use every breakfast
Breakfast included is poor value if you leave before it opens or sleep through it most days. Check the serving hours against your flight, train, tour and meeting schedule. A weekend trip may have one early departure that changes the calculation.
Ask whether the hotel can provide an early packed breakfast if your plans require it. Do not assume this is available or included.
Think about your travel style
Some travelers like a slow hotel breakfast before a day out. Others would rather try a local café. Neither answer is wrong. The useful choice is the one you will actually enjoy and use.
Breakfast can be especially helpful when traveling with children, arriving late the night before or staying somewhere with few morning options. In a neighborhood known for its food, you may prefer to leave room in the budget for somewhere nearby.
Read what is included
"Breakfast" can mean coffee and a pastry, a buffet or a cooked meal. Check the listing for what is served and read recent guest comments about quality, crowding and how often the buffet is refilled. Look for dietary information if it matters to you.
Also check whether breakfast is included for every guest in the room. A family rate may include adults but not children, or the other way around.
Count the time as well as the money
On a busy trip, eating downstairs can save twenty or thirty minutes each morning. That can be worth paying for. On a relaxed trip, a short walk to a bakery may be part of the fun.
If you choose room only, save two or three nearby options before you arrive. Check opening times, especially on Sundays and public holidays.
Make the choice once you know the plan
The best breakfast rate is not automatically the included one. Compare the daily difference, the serving hours and what you would otherwise spend. Choose it when it makes your mornings easier, not because the word "included" makes it feel free.
To compare quickly, browse hotels with breakfast included and check the room-only rate of the same room on the hotel page.
Frequently asked questions
Take the difference between the room-only and breakfast-included totals, divide it by the number of guests and mornings, and compare that with what breakfast nearby would cost.
