+Location was really handy for the Pentland Ferry. The flat was easy to locate and access, very well equipped and furnished.

−Damp, Dark, Dingy, and Depressing. Damp - the windows wide open when we arrived, obviously to try to mask the smell of dampness. This meant the flat was cold when we arrived. The smell of dampness is obvious as soon as you open the front door. Superficially clean but under the couch was thick in dust and debris, around the skirting was dusty, and the rug in the living room obviously hadn't been cleaned in a long time - I was itching, coughing, and sneezing after sitting on it. Furnishings and decor jaded. Nowhere comfortable to sit. The sofa is old and very uncomfortable. It's like something from a house clearance. Flat is dark due to lack of natural light which gives it a depressing air. Bathroom is tiny and difficult to negotiate after a shower. Sat down to dry my feet and almost fell through the cheap thin plastic toilet seat. Towels are small and cheap. Tiling and grouting grubby, mouldy, and needs replaced. Need to wash away the resident woodlice before having a shower. Kitchen is reasonably equipped but having to set up a folding table in the already cramped living room made eating there unappealing. “Terrific location. Very comfortable”
+The location was terrific. Only a couple of minutes from the ferry. There was a public parking space near the flat. Had most things we needed. The kitchen was terrific to cook in. Washing machine as well. Little corner shop around the corner. Tesco, Lidel and Co-op 25 minutes away in Kirkwall. The bed was super comfortable and the reading material gave us so much information about the island and where to go.
−There was no chance of a sleep in with the people upstairs. I think they were “getting their 10,000 steps in” by just walking around the apartment. Up early and very noisy. Only 2 towels for 7 days. The tiny bathroom had no window and only a tiny extraction fan so unfortunately after the first couple of showers we watched the mould grow.

+Well equipped kitchen. Quite nicely modernised 'fisherman's cottage (ground floor) in attractive village. Easy parking.
−Virtually no starter supplies such as milk. Saggy matress and sofa. Woodlice in bathroom and lighter found behind cushions. Street view only.

“Taits Flat and St Margaret's Hope Village with the fabulous Murray Arms was a great base.”
+The location was beautiful. The flat was very well equipped and comfortable.
−In our first week, whoever was occupying the flat above (another holiday let?) got up very early every day, seemingly oblivious that their movements might be disturbing us. They then seemed to have left the property and our second week was beautifully peaceful.
